At the end of each school placement, beginning teachers are required to complete an extended reflection that will be included in the final review statement for that placement. Review Statement 2 for School Placement 1 and Review Statement 4 for School Placement 2. The reflection is normally created over a two-week period, with the draft generally created in the first week and the final version produced in the second week.

The extended reflection provides a written commentary on each area of the Tracker, prompting beginning teachers to thoughtfully consider the progress they have made, as well as the progress of the children they have taught.

During the two weeks in which the extended reflection is written, changes will be made to the Weekly Review agenda. Typically, when beginning teachers write an extended reflection, there is no need to write the normal reflections on the two teaching moments. Full details will be included in the weekly update posts nearer to the time.

However, throughout the two-week period of preparing the extended reflection, formal lesson observations and target setting must continue. See the relevant weekly update post for further details.

Mentors should consider the content of the extended reflection, and any discussions arising from it, when writing their comments on the Review Statement.

This guidance sheet, available to download, has been written to support beginning teachers in writing their extended reflection.
