UPDATE
On 13th November 2024 the DfE announced that the requirement of the statutory 20 hours of mentor training for ITE mentors was to be removed with immediate effect.
We will be updating this page shortly with our new guidelines for mentor training hours. However in the meantime please be aware of the following:
- DfE funding for up to 20 hours mentor training will still be available to schools – we will therefore continue to encourage the use of the mentor development log to allow accurate records for the claiming of this funding as well as allowing mentors to produce a helpful record of their completed training for their own development.
- We highly value and recommend mentor engagement in all aspects of mentor training and encourage our mentors to continue to complete their training hours either online or in person.
- We will issue certification for all mentor training completed.
- At a very minimum we still expect that all mentors will have completed the Phase1 mentor training units and all new mentors are required to complete this in the face-to-face on campus version.
20 hours training in partnership with the South Coast providers network
In collaboration with other local ITE providers we have devised a programme of mentor training and recognition of prior learning.
This includes:
- A mentor development log
- Recorded training materials
- Phase 1 training is offered as face to face on the University campus prior to the start of each placement (October and February)
- Phase 2 training ( and refreshers of phase 1) units can be accessed online
- Phase 3 training will be covered through placement visits and is a bespoke model for both new and experienced mentors.

The mentor development and training log and guidance for completing it can be downloaded below.
There is also an exemplar included at the back of the development log document which can be helpful.
