Adaptive Teaching
The focus of these activities is on adaptive teaching which is one of the ITaP themes.
Activity 1: Focused Observations
Trainees should observe their CM specifically focussing on their use of formative assessment strategies.
Trainees make notes on how their CM knows what the children are learning and most importantly how they adapt their teaching on the basis of their ongoing assessments. What scaffolds are put in place etc?
Trainees will need to think back to the ITaP on adaptive teaching and check the Ordinarily available provision document to help them.
Activity 2: Practising Adaptive Teaching Strategies
Trainees will be video recorded teaching their formal lesson observation as normal. In reviewing it, the focus should be on their adaptive teaching strategies.
Trainees are encouraged to think about what they had planned to do before the lesson, and how they used AfL to respond to the children’s needs as the lesson progressed.
What worked effectively and what might be improved/changed next time? Make some notes ready to discuss in the weekly review meeting.
