Video Enriched Reflection Writing

If trainees are to successfully demonstrate they are meeting the Standards at the end of the programme it is important they reflect appropriately on the right aspects of practice in the right way. Instructions provided in these weekly updates and the special updates must be followed.

Thank you to those trainees who have carefully followed the guidance which has been published in the weekly update posts and special update posts. As a reminder of what is required:

Trainees must ensure they have carefully followed the guidance provided in the special update posts, Special Update 1 and Special Update 2, and followed it carefully in writing reflections for Week 1 and Week 2. A special update will be made shortly to provide guidance for this week’s reflection on Adaptive Teaching. This also needs to be followed carefully.

Please could trainees also ensure they have read and act on the guidance provided in the Effective Noticing of Teaching Moments and the ‘Why?’ Challenge pages.

We will be posting further guidance to support trainees in their reflection and collection of evidence that they are meeting the Teachers’ Standards.

When Professional Tutors visit (from next week) they may need to view a recorded lesson. Please, therefore, ensure that this week’s recording is at least available if no others are. Please keep as many as you can for the official assessment towards the end of the placement.

This Week

The Weekly Expectations are outlined in the handbook (p.34). Please do remember that these are for guidance and CMs should guide trainees through them at a pace that is appropriate for their learning.

By way of a reminder, list of discussion points have been included in Appendix D of the handbook (p.21) to support developmental discussions between CMs and trainees. Please do use these. Appendix C (p.20) contains a lesson observation aid.

This week’s theme is Adaptive Teaching. This week’s FIA target will have been set at the end of Week 3 (31 Mar – 04 Apr), during the Weekly Review Meeting, and should be the focus of this week’s formal lesson observation. There are also two activities for the trainees to complete this week which can be found on this page.

For their reflections, trainees can select any aspect of their practice for both teaching moments 1 and 2 because there is no placement theme next week. The FIA (for week 5) will similarly not relate to a placement theme but must be developed as a result of the teaching moment 2 reflection.

As a reminder, all formal lesson observations must be recorded on the devices provided by the university. Further details can be found in Appendix F of the handbook (p.32) and in this post under ‘Formal Lesson Observation’.
