Video-based reflection

This week (17-21 March), the placement theme that trainees have been focusing on is promoting positive behaviour for learning. To help form their video-based reflection (to be written in the top reflection box of Week 1 in ePortfolio) the following should be completed in reviewing the recording of the formal lesson:

  1. Write down the exact language used when making positive and negative comments.
    • Is there an appropriate balance between the number of positive and negative comments made?
    • Analyse the exact language used when making positive comments:
      • Is there any commonality?
      • Does there need to be more variety?
      • Is the language clear and understood by the children?
    • Repeat the analysis using negative comments.
    • What impact does the comment and the wording used have on the children?
    • Is the tone of voice appropriate for the comment made?
  2. Watch to video without the sound on.
    • Is there a good use of non-verbal communication?
      • Without the sound on, can you tell when you are praising or reprimanding a child? Why or why not?
      • Is there a good and varied use of facial expressions, body language and gestures?

Anything that went went well with in all this could also be used as this weeks Teaching Moment 1.

Any identified areas for improvement from this reflection should be addressed through setting a normal target for next week, not the FIA because this should be set on questioning and modelling.

When reflecting, trainees are encouraged to draw on their learning from the ITaP work on BfL, the SP1 experience and completing this week’s placement theme.
