Video enriched reflection

This week (24-28 March), the placement theme that trainees have been focusing on is questioning and modelling. To help form their video enriched reflection (to be written in the top reflection box of Week 2 in ePortfolio) the following should be completed in reviewing the recording of the formal lesson:

  1. Note the pauses or moments after a question has been asked.
    • How long were these pauses and moments last (wait time)?
    • Was the wait time sufficient?
      • Did children seem to need more time to think before answering?
      • How can wait time be used more effectively?
  2. Questioning Techniques
    • Focus on the use of open and closed questions. After a question has been asked pause the video to note the answers to these questions:
      • Was the question open or closed? (How many of each are asked during the input or the entire lesson)
      • Did the question support the pupils’ learning or was it for assessment purposes? (Overall, was there the right balance between questions for learning and questions for assessment?)
      • Was the question effective in promoting learning? How was it and how do you know?
      • Could the question be more probing or open ended to deepen or challenge the pupils understanding?
    • Has any funnelling taken place and what was the outcome of it?
  3. Modelling
    • Observe the modelling that takes place
      • Was it effective, e.g., it allowed the children to develop their understanding by being:
        • well-structured,
        • well-paced,
        • clear?
      • Did it support the pupils’ understanding or just enabled them to complete an activity? How do you know?

Anything that went went well with in all this could also be used as this weeks Teaching Moment 1.

Any identified areas for improvement from this reflection should be addressed through setting a normal target for next week, not the FIA which can be set on any aspect of practice next week.

When reflecting, trainees are encouraged to draw on their learning from the ITaP work on questioning for learning and effective modelling, the SP1 experience and completing this week’s placement theme.
